character information
● name: Timothy Jackson “Tim” Drake, aka Red Robin
● canon: DC Comics (Rebirth)
● canon point: Detective Comics #940 (as the second wave of drones hits, but before he’s whisked away to a holding cell in time prison, a point which will leave Tim with the belief that he has been killed).
● age: 18
● (canon) background: SIGHS LOUDLY comics are a mistake. DC Comics continuity is a nightmarish tangle of retcons and rewrites, but here’s Tim at Wikipedia and DC Database (one, two - Rebirth undoes a lot of the dumb ideas New 52 introduced so you can probably disregard most of that).
● (original) world: N/A.
● abilities: Tim is a mere mortal, but he possesses natural gifts and a lot of top-tier training. He has a genius-level intellect (his IQ is recorded as 142) and is noted as the most intellectually gifted of all the Robins. His skills in investigation were evident even as a child, since he was able to deduce the true identities of Batman and Robin by the tender age of 9, and they’ve only increased under Batman’s training. Even Bruce Wayne has remarked that Tim could someday surpass him as the world’s greatest detective, a title currently held by none other than him, so that’s high praise for Tim’s abilities. Tim’s also extremely skilled in tactical analysis, able to formulate and execute plans of attack on the fly, noted by Batman as having “the best tactical mind of any partner I’ve worked with.”
Other than his mental abilities, Tim is also in peak physical condition, and well trained in hand-to-hand combat by none other than Batman himself, in addition to several other experts in those fields. He’s a master of several martial arts, including judo and karate, and is highly skilled in fighting with a bo staff, which is his weapon of choice, though he’s also handy with throwing weapons like batarangs, shuriken, etc. He’s been trained in acrobatics and gymnastics, though it didn’t come easily for him, and he also learned stealth, disguise, and escapology during his training as Robin.
Finally, it’s worth noting that Tim is highly skilled in operating computers, hacking, and programming. His accomplishments in this arena include building a supercomputer and its programs from scratch, as well as hacking an entire drone army and reprogramming their targets, and he’s also shown to be capable of hacking Kryptonian tech.
● strengths:
Belief: What Tim believes and the strength of those beliefs define Tim and shape his actions. Tim’s beliefs that Batman is important to Gotham and that Batman needs a Robin to not only function but be his best self are the heart of his origin story, where Tim became the very Robin that Batman needed – not because he believed he was the best person to fill this role, but because he alone saw what was necessary and was willing to make it happen. Tim passionately believes in doing good – as much of it as he possibly can. He has no qualms about working outside of the law as a vigilante, or about using violent methods to achieve his goals of fighting crime and saving lives, but his actions are all guided by his belief that he is doing the right thing. Tim also follows a strict moral code – Batman’s code. There are ironclad lines he won’t cross – namely, he won’t kill.
Responsibility: Tim displays an extremely high sense of responsibility; you don’t fight an unending war on crime as a masked vigilante without a strong sense of personal ownership on the subject, and Tim has felt that call since he was 13 years old. Tim holds himself to stupidly high standards of performance and pushes himself to meet them; when he isn’t able to perform as he expects of himself, he blames himself for the negative outcomes, such as when people are hurt or killed as a result of his actions or mistakes.
Dedication: When Tim decides to take up a cause, there’s very little that can stand in the way of him reaching his goals. He isn’t ruthless or overly reckless in his approach; he’s decisive and determined, confident in his abilities, and doesn’t quit until the job is done.
● weaknesses:
Obsessive: The flip side of having passionate beliefs and a resolve that doesn’t quit is that when they’re left unchecked, they make a sharp turn into obsession. Tim demonstrates this behavior time and time again, such as when his belief that Bruce Wayne, who appeared to be dead but was still alive and trapped in time, sent him on an all-consuming spiral to prove his claims were right, which included pushing away his friends and family and teaming up with notorious international terrorist Ra’s al Ghul. Not Tim’s finest moments, even if his beliefs turned out to be correct.
Self-sacrificing: While this might seem like a virtue, in Tim’s case, it often isn’t; in his dedication to his work and drive to achieve, he routinely pushes himself into behavior that is problematic if not outright destructive, eschewing things like proper sleep and regard for his own mental and physical health. After Tim’s apparent death, in which he literally sacrificed himself to save hundreds of civilians, he returned to work without taking any time to mentally heal from the ordeal, and Batman expressed concern. Tim’s answer? “I don’t care what happens to me!” His heart is inarguably in the right place, he just takes it a step or five too far.
Emotional dishonesty: Tim habitually represses negative emotions, which is never a healthy coping mechanism. Instead of accepting and addressing feelings like anger and sadness and pain, he chooses to ignore them and bury himself in his work, distancing himself from his friends and family in favor of proving He’s Got This Everything Is Fine. This is taken to an extreme example in a possible dystopian future we’re shown, where a heartbroken, angry Tim has morphed into a fascist, murderous Batman, intentionally isolated from the people who care about him.
